Translator's note: Though the original is written in verse, it is beyond my ability to translate it into English verse. That is why I am putting this epic into prose.
童子の乱 鬼のすがたをまね、財を略奪した盗賊・酒呑童子伝説をもとに、歴史的考証を重ね、現代文学として再構築されたロマンあふれる英雄叙事詩。
The Rebellion of Shuten-doji (Dojidaisha 1998)
It is a romance- and adventure-packed heroic epic reconstructed as a modern literary work after many years of study striving for historical authenticity based on the legend of Shuten-doji, a notorious robber in the guise of an Oni (ogre).

第十二連
純粋で邪気をしらない 若者に毒を飲ませて
殺そうとしているのだと 気がついた大野木殿は
耐え難い気持ちになって まだ毒を入れてない酒に
換えようと思って言った。
「この酒は古いせいか 何か味がすこしよくない。
新しい樽を開けて 出したてを持ってきましょう」。
Stanza 12
Now Ohnogi was keenly aware that he was going to poison this pure-hearted and innocent young man.
No longer able to put up with this agony, and having decided to switch to sake not yet blended with that poison, he said, “There is something a little wrong with this sake. It doesn’t taste very good. I’m afraid it is not fresh enough. I will get a new barrel opened so that we will enjoy some good and fresh sake.
